There is no national rule. Many funerals are held within about a week, but the timing depends on the family, the faith tradition, the cemetery and the paperwork. Some states require embalming or refrigeration if the body is not buried or cremated within a certain time (Federal Trade Commission).
What sets the timing
| Factor | How it affects the date |
|---|---|
| Faith tradition | Jewish and Muslim practice generally calls for burial very soon after death. Other traditions leave more room |
| Family travel | The date is often set around when close relatives can arrive |
| Medical examiner or coroner | If the death needs review, the body may not be released right away |
| Permits and paperwork | The funeral home usually secures the necessary permits and death certificates (Federal Trade Commission) |
| Cemetery or crematory schedule | Weekends, holidays and weather can push back a burial |
| Venue and clergy | The place of worship or funeral home has to be available |
If you need more time
Ask the funeral home about refrigeration. No state law requires routine embalming for every death, and in most cases refrigeration is an acceptable alternative where a state sets a time limit (Federal Trade Commission). Many funeral homes require embalming if you are planning a viewing or visitation (Federal Trade Commission). Ask whether a private family viewing without embalming is possible.
If you want it soon
Direct burial and direct cremation take place shortly after death and need no embalming (Federal Trade Commission). You can hold a memorial service later, when people can travel.
Who to ask
The funeral director knows the state's rules and the local cemeteries. You can ask about timing and prices by phone before you commit to anyone (Federal Trade Commission). See our checklist of what to do when someone dies for everything else in the first days.
